“Library To Go” presentation at 2010 PLA Conference
Slide presentation available at: www.nollandtam.com/pla2010
An energizing look at new service models that take fast, convenient and customer-centric library services to the public in an effort to do more with less.
Ideas include:
· expanding services out into the community (transit, shopping and city centers) where potential library users are abundant (Contra Costa County)
· designing/creating flexible operational modules in library buildings… areas that are available when the library is closed for special events, self-check for pick-up of reserves/requests, browsing popular-high use collections, use of tech center and laptop dispensers, access to books and media in vending machines (Walnut Creek, Antioch, Houston)
· Grab & Go… (Santa Clara County/Morgan Hill) outer lobby potential, clean, consistent signage, self-service
· Outpost pick up points (Brooklyn PL)… convenient place to pick up reserves made online, browsing collection of magazines and newspapers, exhibit space, small programming area for storyhours. Each outpost’s services tailored to needs of specific neighborhood.
· Idea Stores (London)… Idea Store focus is on adult education to promote lifelong learning, health, digital fluency. Career support, training classes (yoga, chocolate making) and community programming are supported by the Help Desk in each store.
· MindSpot (Denmark)… a caravan (trailer) with wild paint job and outfitted like a crash pad takes the library (computer, music downloads and place to hang) to where teens congregate
